Barbour County Summary
Barbour County is located in the southeastern corner of Alabama, and is part of the Wiregrass Region. It is bordered by Russell County to the north, Bullock County to the east, Macon County to the south, and Pike County to the west. The county seat is Clayton, and the largest city is Eufaula. The county has a total area of 645 square miles, and a population of 27,457 as of the 2010 census.
History
Barbour County was established on December 18, 1832, from parts of Pike, Henry, and Dale counties. It was named for James Barbour, who served as Governor of Virginia from 1812 to 1814. The county was originally part of the Creek Nation, and was ceded to the United States in the Treaty of Fort Jackson in 1814.
The first settlers in the area were mostly farmers from Georgia and the Carolinas, who arrived in the early 1800s. The county was largely agricultural, with cotton being the main crop. The county was also home to several large plantations, and the population was largely composed of African Americans.
During the Civil War, Barbour County was a major supplier of food and other supplies to the Confederate Army. The county was also the site of several skirmishes between Union and Confederate forces.
