Waiohinu Summary

Waiohinu is a small unincorporated community located in the Kaʻū district of the Big Island of Hawaii. It is situated at the base of Mauna Loa, the world’s largest active volcano, and is surrounded by lush rainforest and rolling hills. The town is home to about 1,000 people and is known for its laid-back atmosphere and stunning natural beauty.

History

Waiohinu has a long and rich history. The area was first settled by Polynesian voyagers in the late 1700s, and the first permanent settlement was established in 1820. The town was originally called Kaʻūpūlehu, which means “the place of the red earth” in Hawaiian. In the early 1900s, the town was renamed Waiohinu, which means “the place of the water” in Hawaiian.
The town was an important center of commerce in the early 1900s, with a bustling port and a thriving sugar cane industry. The town was also home to a large Japanese population, and many of the town’s residents were employed in the sugar cane industry.
In the 1950s, the sugar cane industry began to decline, and the town’s economy shifted to tourism. Today, Waiohinu is a popular destination for tourists looking to experience the unique culture and natural beauty of the Big Island.
