Southeast Fairbanks Census Area, Alaska is located in the southeastern part of the state and is the second largest census area in Alaska. It is bordered by the Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area to the west, the Denali Borough to the north, the Matanuska-Susitna Borough to the east, and the Valdez-Cordova Census Area to the south. The census area covers an area of 25,051 square miles and has a population of 7,029 as of the 2010 census.

History

The area now known as Southeast Fairbanks Census Area was originally inhabited by the Ahtna and Tanana Athabascan people. The area was explored by Russian fur traders in the late 18th century and was later explored by American prospectors in the late 19th century. The area was part of the Alaska Territory until 1959 when it became part of the newly formed state of Alaska.

Geography

Southeast Fairbanks Census Area is located in the southeastern part of Alaska and is bordered by the Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area to the west, the Denali Borough to the north, the Matanuska-Susitna Borough to the east, and the Valdez-Cordova Census Area to the south. The census area covers an area of 25,051 square miles and is the second largest census area in Alaska. The terrain is mostly mountainous and heavily forested. The highest point in the census area is Mount Sanford at 16,237 feet. The climate is subarctic with long, cold winters and short, cool summers.

Economy

The economy of Southeast Fairbanks Census Area is largely based on natural resources. The area is home to several gold mines, as well as oil and gas fields. Mining and oil and gas extraction are the primary industries in the area. Tourism is also an important part of the economy, with visitors coming to the area to take advantage of the area’s natural beauty and outdoor recreation opportunities.

The population is largely Native American, with the majority of the population being Alaska Native or American Indian.
