Anchorage Municipality Summary
Anchorage Municipality, Alaska is the largest city in the state and the most populous municipality in the United States. It is located in the south-central part of the state, on the Cook Inlet, and is the northernmost major city in the United States. Anchorage is the economic and transportation hub of Alaska, and is home to more than 40 percent of the state's population.
History
The area that is now Anchorage was first inhabited by the Dena’ina Athabascan people, who have lived in the region for thousands of years. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 19th century, and the city was officially incorporated in 1920. Anchorage quickly grew in size and importance, becoming the transportation and commercial hub of Alaska. During World War II, the city was a major staging area for the U.S. military, and it was the site of the Alaska-Siberia air route, which was used to ferry supplies to the Soviet Union.
Geography
Anchorage is located in south-central Alaska, on the Cook Inlet. It is surrounded by the Chugach Mountains to the east and the Aleutian Range to the west. The city covers an area of 1,961 square miles, making it the largest city in the state. The climate is subarctic, with cold winters and mild summers.
