Yosemite Lakes Summary
Yosemite Lakes is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Madera County, California, United States. The population was 2,845 at the 2010 census, up from 2,717 at the 2000 census. Yosemite Lakes is located in the Sierra Nevada foothills, approximately 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Fresno.
History
Yosemite Lakes was originally inhabited by the Mono Indians, who lived in the area for thousands of years. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1800s, and the area was officially established as a CDP in the 1970s.
Geography
Yosemite Lakes is located at 37°14′N 119°45′W (37.23, -119.75). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Yosemite Lakes is primarily a residential community, with most of its residents commuting to nearby cities for work. The area is also home to a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,717 people, 1,039 households, and 790 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 327.3 people per square mile (126.3/km2). There were 1,093 housing units at an average density of 131.7 per square mile (50.8/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 87.2% White, 0.7% African American, 1.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 7.2% from other races, and 3.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 14.2% of the population.
There were 1,039 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.2% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.7% were non-families. 20.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $45,938, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $37,500 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $20,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.7% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.
