Exeter Summary
Exeter is a small city located in Tulare County, California, United States. It is situated in the San Joaquin Valley, approximately 8 miles east of Visalia and 18 miles west of Porterville. The population was 10,334 at the 2010 census.
History
Exeter was founded in 1891 by settlers from the Midwest. The city was named after Exeter, New Hampshire, the hometown of one of the settlers. The city was incorporated in 1910.
Geography
Exeter is located at 36°14'2" North, 119°2'17" West (36.233889, -119.038333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.7 square miles, all of it land.
Economy
Exeter's economy is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to a number of large farms, including citrus, cotton, and dairy farms. The city is also home to a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 10,334 people, 3,541 households, and 2,619 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,817.3 people per square mile (1,475.2/km²). There were 3,741 housing units at an average density of 1,383.2 per square mile (534.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 0.7% African American, 1.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 25.7% from other races, and 3.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 44.2% of the population.
There were 3,541 households out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 13.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.2% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.90 and the average family size was 3.41.
In the city, the population was spread out with 30.7% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,917, and the median income for a family was $35,917. Males had a median income of $30,917 versus $21,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,917.
