Merton Summary
Merton is a village located in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,717 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area.
History
Merton was first settled in 1842 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was named after Merton, England. The first post office was established in 1845. The village was incorporated in 1891.
Geography
Merton is located at 43°09'N 88°17'W (43.15, -88.28). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Merton is home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a bank, a gas station, and several restaurants. The village also has a public library and a post office.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,717 people, 990 households, and 790 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,220.3 people per square mile (471.2/km2). There were 1,017 housing units at an average density of 454.3 per square mile (175.6/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.90% White, 0.11% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.81% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 0.67% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.11% of the population.
There were 990 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.2% were married couples living together, 6.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.2% were non-families. 17.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.75 and the average family size was 3.13.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 98.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $62,917, and the median income for a family was $68,958. Males had a median income of $45,938 versus $30,938 for females. The per capita income for the village was $25,945.
