Cochranton borough Summary
Cochranton Borough is a small borough located in Crawford County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the northwestern part of the state, approximately 25 miles south of Erie. The borough is bordered by French Creek Township to the north, East Fairfield Township to the east, and West Fallowfield Township to the south and west. As of the 2010 census, the population of Cochranton was 1,817.
History
Cochranton was founded in 1832 by William Cochran, a local landowner. The town was originally known as Cochran’s Town, but the name was changed to Cochranton in 1836. The town was incorporated as a borough in 1867.
Cochranton was an important stop on the Erie and Pittsburgh Railroad, which ran through the town from 1864 to 1871. The railroad was a major factor in the growth of the town, as it allowed for the transportation of goods and people.
Geography
Cochranton is located at 41°25'N 79°59'W (41.4167, -79.9833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
The borough is located in the Allegheny Plateau region of Pennsylvania. The terrain is generally flat, with some rolling hills. The French Creek, a tributary of the Allegheny River, flows through the borough.
Economy
The economy of Cochranton is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The borough is home to several small businesses, including a lumber mill, a furniture factory, and a dairy farm.
The borough is also home to a number of small retail stores, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a pharmacy.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 1,817 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,521.7 people per square mile (586.7/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 672.5 per square mile (259.3/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.7% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $33,750, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,938 versus $21,875 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $17,845. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
