Glenville Summary
Glenville is a town located in Gilmer County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 1,537 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Gilmer County.
History
Glenville was founded in 1810 by William Haymond, a Revolutionary War veteran. The town was named after his son, Glen Haymond. The town was incorporated in 1836.
In the late 19th century, Glenville was a major center of the timber industry. The town was also home to several coal mines. In the early 20th century, the town was a major center of the oil and gas industry.

Glenville is located at the confluence of the Little Kanawha and Little Kanawha Rivers. The town is situated in the Appalachian Mountains and is surrounded by rolling hills and forests.

The economy of Glenville is largely based on tourism. The town is home to several tourist attractions, including the Glenville State College, the West Virginia Oil and Gas Museum, and the West Virginia State Wildlife Center.

The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.2% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 645 households, out of which 25.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.7% were non-families. 32.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
