Tye Summary
Tye is a small city located in Taylor County, Texas, United States. It is situated about 10 miles (16 km) southwest of Abilene, the county seat. The population of Tye was 1,845 at the 2010 census, up from 1,619 at the 2000 census.
History
Tye was founded in 1881 by the Santa Fe Railroad. The town was named after a railroad official, William Tye. The first post office was established in 1882.
Tye was incorporated in 1909. The town was a center for cotton production and shipping. In the early 20th century, Tye had a population of about 500 people.
Geography
Tye is located at 32°20'25" North, 99°45'45" West (32.340278, -99.7625). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Tye's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several cotton gins and other agricultural businesses. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,619 people, 617 households, and 441 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,346.2 people per square mile (519.7/km2). There were 690 housing units at an average density of 567.2 per square mile (219.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.17% White, 15.90% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 2.90% from other races, and 1.29% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.90% of the population.
There were 617 households, out of which 33.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $27,917, and the median income for a family was $32,917. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,917. About 14.2% of families and 17.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.2% of those under age 18 and 15.2% of those age 65 or over.
