Balch Springs Summary
Balch Springs is a city located in Dallas County, Texas, United States. It is a suburb of Dallas and is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. The population was 25,898 at the 2010 census, up from 17,704 at the 2000 census.
History
The area now known as Balch Springs was first settled in the 1840s by the Balch family, who were among the first settlers in the area. The family established a cotton gin and a trading post, and the area became known as Balch Springs. The town was officially incorporated in 1953.
Geography
Balch Springs is located at 32°45'25" North, 96°37'2" West (32.756944, -96.617222). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.2 square miles (41.8 km2), all of it land.
Economy
The economy of Balch Springs is largely based on retail and services. The city is home to several large retail stores, including Walmart, Target, and Home Depot. There are also several restaurants, banks, and other businesses located in the city.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 17,704 people, 5,845 households, and 4,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,092.2 people per square mile (422.2/km2). There were 6,093 housing units at an average density of 376.3 per square mile (145.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 57.2% White, 24.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 13.7% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 28.2% of the population.
There were 5,845 households, out of which 44.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 16.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.2% were non-families. 18.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 5.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.00 and the average family size was 3.45.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 32.2% under the age of 18, 10.3% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 18.2% from 45 to 64, and 7.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,945, and the median income for a family was $41,945. Males had a median income of $30,945 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,945. About 11.2% of families and 13.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.2% of those under age 18 and 10.2% of those age 65 or over.
