History

Marion County was formed in 1785 from parts of what were then Georgetown and Williamsburg counties. It was named for General Francis Marion, a Revolutionary War hero who was known as the “Swamp Fox” for his guerrilla tactics. The county was originally part of the Waccamaw Neck, a strip of land that extended from the Waccamaw River to the Little Pee Dee River.
In the early 19th century, Marion County was a major cotton-producing region. The county was home to several large plantations, and the town of Marion was a major trading center. The county was also home to several prominent families, including the Allstons, the Witherspoons, and the Wilsons.
