Edgefield County Summary

Edgefield County is located in the western part of South Carolina, and is part of the Augusta-Aiken Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is bordered by Aiken County to the north, Saluda County to the east, McCormick County to the south, and Greenwood County to the west. The county seat is Edgefield, and the population was 26,985 at the 2010 census.

History

Edgefield County was established in 1785, and was named for the Edgefield District of South Carolina. The district was named for the Edgefield family, who were prominent landowners in the area. The county was originally part of Ninety-Six District, and was later divided into Edgefield, Abbeville, and Laurens counties.
The county was home to many prominent figures in South Carolina history, including John C. Calhoun, who served as Vice President of the United States from 1825 to 1832. Calhoun was born in Edgefield County in 1782, and his family owned a plantation in the area.
The county was also home to the famous "Edgefield potters," a group of African-American potters who produced a distinctive style of pottery in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The potters were known for their use of bright colors and intricate designs, and their work is now highly sought after by collectors.
