Lares Municipio Summary
Lares Municipio is a municipality located in the western region of Puerto Rico. It is part of the San Juan-Caguas-Guaynabo Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the municipality had a population of 24,818.
Geography
Lares Municipio is located in the western region of Puerto Rico, in the Cordillera Central mountain range. It is bordered by the municipalities of Adjuntas, Utuado, and San Sebastián. The municipality covers an area of approximately 75 square miles (193 km2). The highest point in the municipality is Cerro La Torre, which has an elevation of 3,945 feet (1,202 m).
The municipality is home to several rivers, including the Río Grande de Arecibo, Río Grande de Manatí, Río Grande de Lares, and Río Grande de San Germán. The municipality also contains several lakes, including Lago de Guajataca, Lago de Cerrillos, and Lago de Lares.
History
The area that is now Lares Municipio was originally inhabited by the Taíno people. The first Spanish settlers arrived in the area in the 16th century. The municipality was officially founded in 1827 and was named after the town of Lares, which was founded in 1815.
In the 19th century, the municipality was a center of the Puerto Rican independence movement. On September 23, 1868, the Grito de Lares (Lares Uprising) was declared in the town of Lares, which led to the establishment of the short-lived Republic of Puerto Rico.
Economy
The economy of Lares Municipio is largely based on agriculture. The main crops grown in the municipality are coffee, plantains, bananas, and yams. The municipality is also home to several small manufacturing companies, which produce a variety of products, including furniture, clothing, and electronics.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, the population of Lares Municipio was 24,818. The population is predominantly of Puerto Rican descent, with a small minority of African and European descent. The median household income in the municipality was $14,845 in 2010.
The majority of the population is Roman Catholic, with a small minority of Protestants. The official language of the municipality is Spanish, although English is also spoken.
