Alpine Summary
Alpine is a small unincorporated community located in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains in Wasco County, Oregon. It is situated at the intersection of Oregon Route 35 and Oregon Route 216, approximately 20 miles east of The Dalles. The population of Alpine was estimated to be around 200 in 2020.
History
Alpine was first settled in the late 1800s by homesteaders who were attracted to the area by its fertile soil and abundant water. The first post office was established in 1891 and the town was officially incorporated in 1895. The town was named after the nearby Alpine Mountain, which was named by early settlers for its resemblance to the Alps in Europe.
In the early 1900s, Alpine was a thriving agricultural community, with a variety of crops being grown in the area. The town also had a sawmill, a general store, a hotel, and a school.
In the 1950s, the town began to decline as the population shifted away from rural areas and towards larger cities. By the 1970s, the population had dropped to around 100.
