Temple is a small town located in Cotton County, Oklahoma. It is situated in the southwestern part of the state, about 20 miles from the Texas border. The town was founded in 1891 and was named after the nearby Temple Creek. The population of Temple was 1,093 at the 2000 census.
Geography
Temple is located at 34°45'25" North, 98°45'25" West (34.756944, -98.756944). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
Economy
The economy of Temple is largely based on agriculture. Cotton, wheat, and sorghum are the main crops grown in the area. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 486 housing units at an average density of 686.2 per square mile (265.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 81.2% White, 0.2% African American, 14.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.9% from other races, and 3.2% from two or more races.
