Piedmont Summary
Piedmont is a city located in Canadian County, Oklahoma, United States. It is part of the Oklahoma City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 6,597 at the 2010 census, an increase of 28.2 percent from 5,148 at the 2000 census.
Geography
Piedmont is located at (35.637, -97.764). It is situated in the rolling hills of Canadian County, approximately 15 miles northwest of downtown Oklahoma City. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), all land.
History
Piedmont was founded in 1889 by the Piedmont Land and Townsite Company. The town was named after the Piedmont region of Italy. The first post office was established in 1890. The town was incorporated in 1901.
Piedmont was a farming community until the 1950s, when it began to experience rapid growth due to its proximity to Oklahoma City. The population increased from 1,000 in 1950 to 5,148 in 2000.

The economy of Piedmont is largely based on the service industry. The city is home to several large employers, including the Piedmont Public Schools, the Piedmont Regional Medical Center, and the Piedmont Municipal Airport.

As of the census of 2000, there were 5,148 people, 1,945 households, and 1,521 families residing in the city. The population density was 627.2 people per square mile (242.2/km2). There were 2,072 housing units at an average density of 253.2 per square mile (97.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 0.7% African American, 2.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 3.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.7% of the population.
There were 1,945 households, out of which 39.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.2% were non-families. 19.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 9.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $56,917. Males had a median income of $41,964 versus $27,917 for females.
