The area that is now Lawrence was originally inhabited by the Matinecock Native American tribe. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1600s. The area was originally known as Rockaway Neck, and was part of the Town of Hempstead. In 1853, the area was renamed Lawrence after Captain James Lawrence, a naval hero of the War of 1812.
