Geography
Sylva is located at 35°22′N 83°13′W (35.37, -83.22). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.
History
Sylva was founded in 1883 as the county seat of Jackson County. The town was named after William D. Sylva, a prominent local landowner. The town was incorporated in 1889.
The town was a center of activity during the Civil War, with the Battle of Tuckasegee fought nearby in 1863. The town was also the site of a major railroad junction, with the Western North Carolina Railroad connecting the town to Asheville and the Murphy Branch connecting the town to Murphy.
Economy
Sylva is the economic hub of Jackson County. The town is home to several businesses, including a number of restaurants, retail stores, and professional services. The town is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a furniture factory and a paper mill.

As of the census of 2010, there were 2,588 people, 1,093 households, and 602 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,170.9 people per square mile (452.3/km2). There were 1,223 housing units at an average density of 554.5 per square mile (214.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 92.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 42.2% were non-families. 35.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
