Carolina Beach Summary
Carolina Beach is a town located in New Hanover County, North Carolina, United States. It is part of the Wilmington metropolitan area. The population was 5,052 at the 2010 census.
History
Carolina Beach was first settled in the early 1700s by the English, who named it after the nearby Cape Fear River. The town was incorporated in 1925 and was originally a fishing village. In the early 1900s, the town began to attract tourists, and by the 1930s, it had become a popular beach destination.
The town was devastated by Hurricane Hazel in 1954, but it was quickly rebuilt and continued to attract tourists. In the 1960s, the town began to develop a more permanent population, and it has since become a popular residential community.
Geography
Carolina Beach is located at 34°02'25" North, 77°54'45" West (34.040278, -77.912500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), of which 3.9 square miles (10.1 km2) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.7 km2) is water.
Economy
The economy of Carolina Beach is largely based on tourism. The town is home to several hotels, restaurants, and other businesses that cater to tourists. The town also has a thriving fishing industry, and there are several marinas in the area.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 5,052 people, 2,093 households, and 1,323 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,288.2 people per square mile (496.7/km2). There were 2,919 housing units at an average density of 748.3 per square mile (288.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 87.2% White, 6.2% African American, 0.5% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.3% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 2,093 households, out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 21.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $41,944, and the median income for a family was $50,917. Males had a median income of $31,912 versus $25,917 for females. The per capita income for the town was $21,945. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
