Eupora Summary
Eupora is a city located in Webster County, Mississippi, United States. It is the county seat of Webster County and is located along the Tombigbee River. The population was 2,922 at the 2010 census.
History
The area that is now Eupora was first settled in the early 1800s. The town was originally known as "Crossroads" due to its location at the intersection of two major roads. In 1856, the town was renamed Eupora, which is derived from the Greek words for "good view".
The town was officially incorporated in 1858 and was designated as the county seat of Webster County in 1874. During the Civil War, Eupora was the site of a Confederate camp.
Geography
Eupora is located at 33°45'25" North, 89°2'25" West (33.756944, -89.040278). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.
Economy
The economy of Eupora is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several manufacturing plants, including a furniture plant, a wood products plant, and a plastics plant. The city is also home to several agricultural businesses, including a cotton gin, a grain elevator, and a feed mill.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,845 people, 1,093 households, and 745 families residing in the city. The population density was 677.2 people per square mile (261.3/km2). There were 1,213 housing units at an average density of 288.2 per square mile (111.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.45% White, 30.45% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 0.57% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.53% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 19.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 83.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 78.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $25,938, and the median income for a family was $31,964. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $19,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,945. About 19.2% of families and 22.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.2% of those under age 18 and 20.2% of those age 65 or over.
