Crystal Summary
Crystal is a city located in Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. It is a first-ring suburb of Minneapolis and is located on the west side of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. The population was 22,151 at the 2010 census.
History
The area that is now Crystal was first settled in the 1850s. The first settlers were mostly German and Scandinavian immigrants who were attracted to the area by the abundance of timber and the proximity to Minneapolis. The area was originally known as the “Crystal Lake Settlement” and was named after the nearby Crystal Lake.
In 1888, the area was incorporated as the Village of Crystal. The village was named after the nearby Crystal Lake, which was named after the crystal-clear water of the lake. The village was annexed by the City of Minneapolis in 1920.
In 1954, the City of Crystal was incorporated as a separate city from Minneapolis. The city was named after the nearby Crystal Lake.
Geography
Crystal is located at 45°02'N 93°20'W (45.037, -93.333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), of which 5.1 square miles (13.2 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.
Economy
Crystal is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The city is home to several large employers, including the headquarters of the Supervalu grocery store chain, the headquarters of the Toro Company, and the headquarters of the Minnesota Twins baseball team.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 22,151 people, 8,945 households, and 5,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 4,323.3 people per square mile (1,668.2/km2). There were 9,541 housing units at an average density of 1,867.2 per square mile (721.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.5% Native American, 5.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 3.3% from other races, and 3.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.2% of the population.
There were 8,945 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $62,917. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $33,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $25,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
