Martin County Summary

Martin County is a county located in the state of Minnesota. It is part of the Mankato-North Mankato Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population was 20,840. The county seat is Fairmont.

Geography

Martin County is located in the south-central part of Minnesota. It is bordered by Faribault County to the north, Blue Earth County to the east, Watonwan County to the south, and Jackson County to the west. The county has a total area of 576 square miles, of which 573 square miles is land and 3.2 square miles (0.6%) is water.
The county is located in the Minnesota River Valley, and is drained by the Blue Earth River, which flows through the county from north to south. The county is also home to several small lakes, including Lake Sisseton, Lake Washington, and Lake Hanska.

History

Martin County was established in 1857. It was named after Henry Martin, a prominent early settler in the area. The county was originally part of Faribault County, but was split off in 1857.
The first settlers in the county arrived in 1856, and the county was officially organized in 1857. The first county seat was located in Fairmont, which was established in 1858.

Economy

The economy of Martin County is largely based on agriculture. The county is home to several large farms, and is a major producer of corn, soybeans, and other crops.
The county is also home to several manufacturing companies, including Martin Manufacturing, which produces agricultural equipment, and Martin Industries, which produces automotive parts.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 20,840 people, 8,093 households, and 5,541 families living in the county. The population density was 36.3 people per square mile. There were 8,845 housing units at an average density of 15.4 per square mile.
The racial makeup of the county was 97.2% White, 0.5% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.6% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 8,093 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.01.
In the county, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $41,945, and the median income for a family was $50,945. Males had a median income of $35,945 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the county was $20,945. About 5.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
