Greensburg Summary
Greensburg is a town in St. Helena Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,719 at the 2010 census. It is the parish seat of St. Helena Parish.
History
Greensburg was founded in 1810 by William Green, a planter from Virginia. The town was named after him and was incorporated in 1817. It was the first town in St. Helena Parish.
Greensburg was the site of a major battle during the Civil War. On April 8, 1863, Confederate forces under General Richard Taylor defeated Union forces under General Nathaniel Banks. The battle was a major victory for the Confederacy and helped to secure the area for the remainder of the war.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,719 people, 690 households, and 463 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,420.3 people per square mile (548.7/km2). There were 762 housing units at an average density of 622.3 per square mile (239.9/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 57.45% White, 40.90% African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 0.12% from other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.76% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.3% were married couples living together, 22.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 83.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $20,938, and the median income for a family was $25,625. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $17,500 for females.
