Horace Summary
Horace, Kansas is a small town located in the northwest corner of the state, in Reno County. It is situated on the Arkansas River, and is part of the Hutchinson, Kansas Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1887, and was named after Horace Greeley, the famous newspaper editor and politician.
Geography
Horace is located at 37°45'25" North, 98°2'25" West (37.756944, -98.040278). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the town. The population density was 890.2 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 372.2 per square mile (143.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.45% White, 0.18% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.37% from other races, and 1.26% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.46% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.5% were married couples living together, 8.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 28.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.17.
