Marengo was founded in 1818 by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The town was named after the Battle of Marengo, which was fought in 1800 during the Napoleonic Wars. The town was originally a trading post and ferry crossing, and it quickly grew into a thriving community.

There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
