History
Jasper was founded in 1818 by William Jasper and his brother-in-law, John Badollet. The two men had purchased land in the area from the government and decided to settle there. The city was named after William Jasper, a Revolutionary War hero who had died in the Battle of Savannah in 1779.
The first settlers in Jasper were mostly German immigrants who had come to the area in search of religious freedom. The city was officially incorporated in 1845.
In the late 19th century, Jasper became a major center for the production of furniture. The city was home to several furniture factories, including the Jasper Chair Company, which was founded in 1876. The company was one of the largest furniture manufacturers in the United States at the time.
Geography
Jasper is located at 38°24′N 86°55′W (38.40, -86.92). According to the 2010 census, the city has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), of which 8.2 square miles (21.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.
The city is located in the rolling hills of southern Indiana, about 50 miles (80 km) northeast of Evansville. The Patoka River flows through the city, and the city is surrounded by several small lakes.

Jasper is a major center for manufacturing in the region. The city is home to several large factories, including the Jasper Chair Company, which produces furniture, and the Jasper Engines and Transmissions plant, which produces automotive parts.

As of the 2010 census, there were 15,038 people, 6,093 households, and 3,845 families living in the city. The population density was 1,827.2 people per square mile (706.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 6,093 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.3% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,845, and the median income for a family was $45,945. Males had a median income of $35,945 versus $22,857 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,945. About 8.2% of families and 10.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
