Woodlawn Summary
Woodlawn is a village located in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is a suburb of Chicago, located approximately 15 miles south of the city. The population of Woodlawn was 8,845 at the 2010 census.
History
Woodlawn was first settled in the late 19th century by German and Irish immigrants. The village was incorporated in 1892. The original name of the village was "Woodland," but it was changed to Woodlawn in 1895.
The village was home to a large African-American population in the early 20th century. In the 1950s, Woodlawn was the site of a large-scale urban renewal project, which included the construction of the Robert Taylor Homes, a public housing project. The project was controversial, and it was eventually demolished in the late 1990s.

Woodlawn is located at 41°41'25"N 87°37'45"W (41.690278, -87.629167). According to the 2010 census, Woodlawn has a total area of 1.2 square miles, all land.
Economy
Woodlawn has a diverse economy, with a mix of retail, manufacturing, and service businesses. The village is home to several large employers, including the University of Chicago Medical Center, the University of Chicago, and the University of Chicago Hospitals.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 8,845 people, 3,717 households, and 2,072 families residing in the village. The population density was 7,541.3 people per square mile (2,912.2/km2). There were 4,093 housing units at an average density of 3,420.3 per square mile (1,323.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 44.2% White, 43.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 5.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.7% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.3% of the population.
There were 3,717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 28.2% were married couples living together, 24.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.2% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 88.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $30,938, and the median income for a family was $36,944. Males had a median income of $30,938 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $15,945. About 17.2% of families and 20.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.2% of those under age 18 and 11.2% of those age 65 or over.
