Wapella Summary
Wapella is a small village located in DeWitt County, Illinois, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bloomington–Normal Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Wapella was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The village was named after Chief Wapella, a Potawatomi chief who lived in the area. The first post office was established in 1855.
In 1858, the village was incorporated and the first mayor was elected. The first school was built in 1859 and the first church was built in 1860.
In 1867, the first railroad line was built through the village, connecting it to Bloomington and Decatur. This allowed for the growth of the village and the development of businesses.
In 1872, the village was connected to the telegraph system, allowing for communication with the outside world.

The economy of Wapella is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, as well as a few small businesses.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the village. The population density was 891.7 people per square mile (344.7/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 382.5 per square mile (147.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 25.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,845. About 5.3% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.3% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.
