Farmer City Summary
Farmer City is a small city located in DeWitt County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,071 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bloomington–Normal Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
The area that is now Farmer City was first settled in 1829 by William and Mary Farmer. The city was officially incorporated in 1867. The city was named after the Farmer family, who were among the first settlers in the area.
Geography
Farmer City is located at 40°25'17" North, 88°51'45" West (40.421445, -88.862445). According to the 2010 census, the city has a total area of 1.37 square miles (3.55 km2), all land.
Economy
The economy of Farmer City is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several large farms, as well as a number of smaller family-owned farms. The city also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 2,071 people, 817 households, and 545 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,510.2 people per square mile (584.2/km2). There were 881 housing units at an average density of 644.3 per square mile (248.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.4% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 817 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $36,250 versus $25,000 for females.
