East Peoria Summary
East Peoria is a city located in Tazewell County, Illinois, United States. It is part of the Peoria, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 23,402 at the 2010 census.
History
East Peoria was founded in 1871 by a group of settlers from Peoria, Illinois. The city was originally known as "Coonville" after the first settler, John Coon. The name was changed to East Peoria in 1892.
East Peoria was incorporated as a village in 1895 and as a city in 1901. The city grew rapidly in the early 20th century, with the population increasing from 1,000 in 1900 to over 10,000 by 1950.
Geography
East Peoria is located at 40°40'25" North, 89°35'17" West (40.673611, -89.588333). According to the 2010 census, the city has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29 km2), of which 11.1 square miles (29 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km2) is water.
Economy
East Peoria is home to a variety of businesses and industries. The city is home to the headquarters of Caterpillar Inc., the world's largest manufacturer of construction and mining equipment. Other major employers include OSF Healthcare, Fondulac Bank, and the East Peoria Walmart Supercenter.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 23,402 people, 9,845 households, and 6,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,097.2 people per square mile (808.7/km2). There were 10,541 housing units at an average density of 945.2 per square mile (364.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 6.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.2% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.3% of the population.
There were 9,845 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.3% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $54,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $27,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $22,945. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
