History
Browning was founded in 1854 by William Browning, a settler from Ohio. He purchased the land from the federal government and began to develop the area. The village was originally known as Browning’s Station, and was a stop on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. The village was officially incorporated in 1872.
In the late 19th century, Browning was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, a creamery, and a lumber yard. The village also had a hotel, a bank, a post office, and several stores.
In the early 20th century, the village began to decline. The railroad stopped running through the village in the 1920s, and the population began to decline. The village was also hit hard by the Great Depression.
