Spencer, Iowa is a city located in Clay County, Iowa, United States. It is the county seat of Clay County and is located along the Little Sioux River. The population was 11,233 at the 2010 census.
History
Spencer was founded in 1871 by the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad. The city was named after the railroad's president, Spencer. The first settlers arrived in 1872 and the city was incorporated in 1883.
The city was a major center for the railroad industry and was home to several large rail yards. The city was also a major center for the lumber industry, with several large sawmills located in the area.
Geography
Spencer is located at 43°7′25″N 95°9′25″W (43.123611, -95.156944). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which 8.1 square miles (21.0 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.
Economy
Spencer is a major center for the agricultural industry, with several large farms located in the area. The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a large pork processing plant.
The city is also home to several retail stores, including a Walmart Supercenter, a Hy-Vee grocery store, and several other smaller stores.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 11,233 people, 4,717 households, and 2,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,385.2 people per square mile (534.7/km2). There were 5,093 housing units at an average density of 627.3 per square mile (242.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.7% of the population.
There were 4,717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 12.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.7% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 19.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $33,917, and the median income for a family was $41,945. Males had a median income of $30,917 versus $21,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,945. About 8.7% of families and 11.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
