History
Fairbank was founded in 1855 by a group of German immigrants led by John Fairbank. The town was originally named Fairbank Station, and was the first settlement in Buchanan County. The town was officially incorporated in 1858, and the name was changed to Fairbank.
The town was an important stop on the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, and was a major shipping point for grain and livestock. The railroad also brought many new settlers to the area, and the town grew rapidly.
