Durant Summary
Durant is a city located in Cedar County, Iowa, United States. The population was 2,845 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cedar County.
History
Durant was founded in 1856 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after William Durant, a prominent local landowner. The first post office was established in 1857.
In 1858, the first school was built in Durant. The first church was built in 1859. The first newspaper, the Durant Gazette, was established in 1867.

Durant's economy is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several grain elevators, a feed mill, and a fertilizer plant.

As of the census of 2010, there were 2,845 people, 1,093 households, and 745 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,364.2 people per square mile (912.2/km2). There were 1,183 housing units at an average density of 986.7 per square mile (381.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
