History
Fayetteville was founded in 1823 as the county seat of Fayette County. It was named after the Marquis de Lafayette, a French military hero who fought in the American Revolutionary War. The city was incorporated in 1823 and has been the county seat ever since.
The city was a major center of the cotton industry in the 19th century. It was also a major stop on the Atlanta and West Point Railroad, which connected Atlanta to the Gulf of Mexico.
Geography
Fayetteville is located in the southern part of Fayette County, about 25 miles south of Atlanta. It is situated at the intersection of U.S. Route 19 and Georgia State Route 85. The city is located in the Piedmont region of Georgia, and is surrounded by rolling hills and forests.
The city has a total area of 8.7 square miles, of which 8.6 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water.

Fayetteville’s economy is largely based on manufacturing and retail. The city is home to several large manufacturing companies, including Fayetteville Plastics, Fayetteville Textiles, and Fayetteville Foundry.
