Desoto Lakes Summary
DeSoto Lakes is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Manatee County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bradenton–Sarasota–Venice Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
DeSoto Lakes was first settled in the late 19th century by settlers from the nearby town of DeSoto. The area was originally known as DeSoto Lakes, but the name was changed to DeSoto Lakes in the early 20th century. The area was primarily used for farming and ranching until the 1950s, when the population began to grow. The area was officially incorporated as a CDP in 1980.
Geography
DeSoto Lakes is located at 27°30'25" North, 82°30'45" West (27.506944, -82.5125). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), of which 4.1 square miles (10.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (2.37%) is water.
Economy
DeSoto Lakes is primarily a residential community, with most of its residents employed in the nearby cities of Bradenton and Sarasota. The area is also home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a gas station, and a few restaurants.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,845 people, 1,093 households, and 817 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 690.3 people per square mile (266.7/km2). There were 1,179 housing units at an average density of 285.2/sq mi (110.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 94.45% White, 1.90% African American, 0.21% Native American, 1.90% Asian, 0.14% Pacific Islander, 0.53% from other races, and 1.37% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.45% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.2% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.7% were non-families. 21.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $45,938, and the median income for a family was $51,964. Males had a median income of $35,938 versus $26,250 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $20,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
