Yell County Summary

Geography

Yell County covers an area of 845 square miles and is located in the Arkansas River Valley. The terrain is mostly flat with some rolling hills. The Arkansas River forms the northern border of the county and the Petit Jean River forms the southern border. The county is home to several lakes, including Lake Dardanelle, Lake Atkins, and Lake Nimrod. The climate is humid subtropical with hot summers and mild winters.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, Yell County had a population of 22,185. The racial makeup of the county was 92.3% White, 4.2% Black or African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.

Economy

Yell County is primarily an agricultural county, with the main crops being cotton, soybeans, corn, and wheat. The county is also home to several manufacturing companies, including Tyson Foods, which has a large poultry processing plant in Danville. Other industries in the county include timber, tourism, and retail.

History

Yell County was formed in 1840 from parts of Scott and Pope counties. It was named after Archibald Yell, the first congressman from Arkansas and a hero of the Mexican-American War. The county seat was originally located in Dardanelle, but was moved to Danville in 1875.
During the Civil War, Yell County was a major battleground. The Battle of Dardanelle was fought in the county in 1863, and the Battle of Dardanelle Bend was fought in 1864. The county was also the site of several skirmishes between Union and Confederate forces.
In the late 19th century, Yell County was a major producer of cotton. The county was also home to several sawmills and gristmills. In the early 20th century, the county began to diversify its economy, with the development of poultry processing and other industries.
Today, Yell County is a rural county with a strong agricultural base. The county is home to several small towns and cities, and is a popular destination for outdoor recreation.
