The county was established in 1845 and named after George M. Dallas, the 11th Vice President of the United States. As of the 2010 census, the population of Dallas County was 8,116, making it the second least populous county in Arkansas.

Geography

Dallas County is located in the Ouachita Mountains region of Arkansas. The county is bordered by Cleveland County to the north, Bradley County to the east, Calhoun County to the south, and Clark County to the west. The county has a total area of 576 square miles, of which 575 square miles is land and 1.2 square miles is water. The county is drained by the Ouachita River and its tributaries. The highest point in the county is located at the summit of Mount Ida, which has an elevation of 1,400 feet.
The county is home to several state parks, including Caney Creek State Park, which is located in the northern part of the county. The park offers camping, fishing, and hiking opportunities. Other parks in the county include Daisy State Park, which is located in the southern part of the county, and Lake Greeson State Park, which is located in the western part of the county.

About 17.2% of families and 22.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.3% of those under age 18 and 16.2% of those age 65 or over.

Dallas County is served by the Dallas County School District, which operates several elementary, middle, and high schools in the county. The county is also home to two private schools, Dallas Christian Academy and St. Mary’s Catholic School. The county is also home to the University of Arkansas at Monticello, which is located in the city of Monticello.
