Pell City Summary
Pell City is a city in St. Clair County, Alabama, United States. It is located on the eastern shore of Logan Martin Lake, about 20 miles east of Birmingham. The population was 12,695 at the 2010 census.
History
Pell City was founded in 1890 by railroad magnate John T. Milner, who named the city after his friend, Senator George H. Pell of New York. The city was incorporated in 1896.
Pell City was the site of a major steel mill, the St. Clair Steel Company, which was founded in 1902 and operated until it closed in the late 1980s. The mill was the largest employer in the city and provided much of the city's economic base.
Geography
Pell City is located at 33°35'25" North, 86°17'45" West (33.590278, -86.295833). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.2 square miles, of which 15.9 square miles is land and 0.3 square miles is water.
Economy
Pell City's economy is largely based on manufacturing and retail. The city is home to several large manufacturing plants, including a steel mill, a paper mill, and a plastics plant. The city also has a number of retail stores, including a Walmart Supercenter, a Lowe's Home Improvement store, and several restaurants.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 12,695 people, 5,093 households, and 3,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 797.3 people per square mile. There were 5,619 housing units at an average density of 353.3 per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 16.3% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.7% of the population.
There were 5,093 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.99.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,845, and the median income for a family was $45,945. Males had a median income of $35,945 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,945. About 10.2% of families and 13.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.2% of those under age 18 and 11.2% of those age 65 or over.
