Kerens Summary
Kerens is a city located in Navarro County, Texas, United States. It is situated along State Highway 31, approximately halfway between Corsicana and Athens. The population was 2,126 at the 2010 census.
History
Kerens was founded in 1881 by the Houston and Texas Central Railway. The city was named after Kerenhappuch Turner, the daughter of a railroad official. The first post office was established in 1882.
In 1884, the Kerens Independent School District was established. The first school building was constructed in 1885. The city was incorporated in 1891.
Geography
Kerens is located at 32°11'25" North, 96°17'45" West (32.1904, -96.2958). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Kerens is a small rural community with a population of 2,126. The economy is largely based on agriculture and related industries. The city is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a few other small shops.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,126 people, 809 households, and 571 families residing in the city. The population density was 962.2 people per square mile (371.7/km2). There were 909 housing units at an average density of 412.2 per square mile (159.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.17% White, 16.90% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 2.45% from other races, and 0.95% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.17% of the population.
There were 809 households, out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.7% were non-families. 25.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.10.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,938, and the median income for a family was $36,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females.
