Wickliffe Summary

Wickliffe, Ohio is a city located in Lake County, Ohio, United States. The population was 12,750 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Cleveland metropolitan area. Wickliffe is located on the shore of Lake Erie, and is bordered by Euclid to the north, Willoughby Hills to the east, Willowick to the south, and Lakeline to the west.

History

Wickliffe was first settled in 1810 by a group of settlers from Connecticut. The town was named after General Edward Wickliffe, a Revolutionary War hero. The first post office was established in 1817, and the first school was built in 1820. The town was incorporated in 1921.
In the early 20th century, Wickliffe was a popular summer resort destination for Clevelanders. The city was home to several amusement parks, including Euclid Beach Park, which opened in 1895 and closed in 1969.

Geography

Wickliffe is located at 41°35′N 81°30′W (41.58, -81.50). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), of which 4.1 square miles (10.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

Economy

Wickliffe is home to several businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The city is also home to a number of corporate headquarters, including the headquarters of the Lubrizol Corporation, a specialty chemicals company.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 12,750 people, 5,093 households, and 3,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,093.3 people per square mile (1,193.3/km2). There were 5,541 housing units at an average density of 1,346.3 per square mile (520.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 5,093 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $60,945. Males had a median income of $45,945 versus $32,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $25,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
