Richfield, Ohio is a village located in Summit County, Ohio, United States. It is a suburb of Akron and Cleveland and is part of the Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 3,648 at the 2010 census.

History

Richfield was first settled in 1809 by a group of settlers from Connecticut. The village was originally known as Richfield Center, and was incorporated in 1815. The village was named after the rich soil in the area.
In the early 19th century, Richfield was a farming community, and the village was known for its apple orchards. In the late 19th century, the village began to grow as a summer resort destination, and many wealthy families built large homes in the area.
In the early 20th century, Richfield began to develop into a residential community. The village was home to several large estates, and many of the homes in the area were built in the 1920s and 1930s.

Geography

Richfield is located at 41°10'45" North, 81°37'45" West (41.179167, -81.629167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.

As of the census of 2010, there were 3,648 people, 1,521 households, and 1,039 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,664.5 people per square mile (641.3/km2). There were 1,637 housing units at an average density of 735.9 per square mile (284.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 1,521 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% were non-families. 26.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.91.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.
