Powell, Ohio is a city located in Delaware County, Ohio, United States. The population was 11,500 at the 2010 census. Powell is a suburb of Columbus, the state capital and largest city in Ohio.

History

Powell was founded in 1801 by William and Mary Powell, who were among the first settlers in the area. The city was originally known as Middlebury, but was renamed Powell in 1857 in honor of the founders. The city was incorporated in 1947.

Geography

Powell is located at 40°11'17" North, 83°4'45" West (40.188056, -83.079167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), all land.

Economy

Powell is home to several large employers, including the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, the Columbus Clippers baseball team, and the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. The city also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 11,500 people, 4,541 households, and 3,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,400.7 people per square mile (541.3/km2). There were 4,845 housing units at an average density of 590.2 per square mile (228.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 2.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 2.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 4,541 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.2% were married couples living together, 6.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.7% were non-families. 18.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 30.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
