Independence Summary

Independence is a city located in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. It is a suburb of Cleveland and is located on the southern edge of the county. The population was 7,133 at the 2010 census.

History

Independence was first settled in 1819 by a group of settlers from Connecticut. The town was originally known as Rockside, but was later renamed Independence in 1825. The town was incorporated in 1827 and was the first town in Cuyahoga County to be incorporated.
In the early days, Independence was a farming community and was known for its apple orchards. The town was also home to a number of mills, including a grist mill, a saw mill, and a woolen mill.
In the late 19th century, Independence began to grow as a suburb of Cleveland. The town was connected to Cleveland by the Cleveland and Mahoning Valley Railroad in 1871. The railroad allowed for the easy transportation of goods and people between the two cities.

Independence is located at 41°22′17″N 81°35′45″W (41.371445, -81.595890). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.90 square miles (12.69 km2), of which 4.88 square miles (12.63 km2) is land and 0.02 square miles (0.06 km2) is water.
