Hudson Summary

Hudson, Ohio is a city located in Summit County, Ohio, United States. It is situated along the Cuyahoga River and is part of the Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city has a population of 22,262 as of the 2010 census.

History

Hudson was founded in 1799 by David Hudson, a surveyor from Connecticut. The city was originally known as "Hudsonville" and was incorporated in 1837. The city was named after its founder, and the name was changed to "Hudson" in 1867.
Hudson was an important stop on the Underground Railroad, and the city was home to several prominent abolitionists, including John Brown and Salmon P. Chase. The city was also home to the Hudson Manufacturing Company, which produced stoves and other products.

Geography

Hudson is located at 41°14'N 81°25'W (41.23, -81.41). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which 8.1 square miles (21.0 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

Economy

Hudson is home to several large employers, including Jo-Ann Stores, Inc., a fabric and craft retailer; FirstEnergy, an energy company; and the Hudson City School District. The city is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 22,262 people, 8,845 households, and 5,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,741.3 people per square mile (1,058.2/km2). There were 9,521 housing units at an average density of 1,174.2 per square mile (453.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 3.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 8,845 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.3% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $62,917, and the median income for a family was $76,917. Males had a median income of $51,917 versus $37,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $30,917. About 3.2% of families and 4.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.3% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
