Groveport Summary
Groveport, Ohio is a small city located in Franklin County, Ohio, United States. It is situated along the Scioto River, approximately 10 miles south of Columbus, the state capital. The city has a population of approximately 5,000 people and is part of the Columbus metropolitan area.
History
The area that is now Groveport was first settled in 1805 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The settlement was originally known as “Crossroads” due to its location at the intersection of two major roads. In 1831, the settlement was renamed “Groveport” after the grove of trees that surrounded the area.
In 1839, the first post office was established in Groveport. The town was incorporated in 1845 and was officially recognized as a village in 1851. In 1853, the first school was built in Groveport.
In 1871, the Groveport and Columbus Railroad was built, connecting Groveport to the city of Columbus. This allowed for the growth of the city and the development of industry. In 1875, the first newspaper, the Groveport Gazette, was established.
In 1891, the Groveport Electric Light and Power Company was established, providing electricity to the city. In 1895, the first telephone service was established in Groveport.
In the early 20th century, Groveport experienced a period of growth and development. In 1910, the population of Groveport was 1,845. By 1930, the population had grown to 3,845.
