History

Gates Mills was founded in 1826 by Colonel John Gates, a veteran of the War of 1812. He purchased the land from the Connecticut Land Company and named the village after himself. The village was incorporated in 1927.
Gates Mills was originally a farming community, but it has since become a residential suburb of Cleveland. The village is home to many affluent residents, and it is known for its large estates and historic homes.

Geography

Gates Mills is located at 41°30'25" North, 81°30'25" West (41.506944, -81.506944). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.2 square miles, all of it land.

The racial makeup of the village was 94.2% White, 1.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.4% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 890 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.2% were married couples living together, 6.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.7% were non-families. 19.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 4.2% from 18 to 24, 22.2% from 25 to 44, 33.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $107,917, and the median income for a family was $118,917. Males had a median income of $90,000 versus $50,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $60,917.
