Frankfort was founded in 1817 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The village was named after the city of Frankfurt, Germany, and was originally known as Frankfort Station. The village was incorporated in 1831 and was the first village in Ross County to be incorporated.
The village was an important stop on the Underground Railroad, with many of the local residents helping to hide and transport escaped slaves. The village was also home to a number of prominent abolitionists, including John Rankin and Levi Coffin.
