Casstown Summary

Casstown is a small village located in Miami County, Ohio, United States. The village is situated along the Stillwater River, and is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the village had a population of 545.

History

Casstown was founded in 1817 by John Cassel, a German immigrant. The village was originally known as Casselstown, but the name was changed to Casstown in 1837. The village was incorporated in 1867.
Casstown was a small farming community for much of its history. In the late 19th century, the village was home to several mills, including a grist mill, a saw mill, and a woolen mill. The village also had a post office, a blacksmith shop, and a general store.

Geography

Casstown is located at 39°51'45" North, 84°14'45" West (39.8624, -84.2458). The village is situated along the Stillwater River, and is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The economy of Casstown is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, and the surrounding area is known for its production of corn, soybeans, and wheat.
The village also has a few small businesses, including a gas station, a convenience store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 545 people, 206 households, and 149 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,817.3 people per square mile (700.7/km2). There were 221 housing units at an average density of 740.0 per square mile (285.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.
There were 206 households, out of which 33.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.9% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.1% were non-families. 24.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
